Three men linked to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Salim Ibrahim ordered that the life sentences should take effect from the date the convicts were arrested.
During the sentencing, the defence asked the court to show mercy, noting that the defendants were first-time offenders who pleaded guilty and expressed remorse. Counsel also argued that they were married with children and had elderly parents who depended on them.
However, the prosecution opposed the request for a lighter sentence, maintaining that the convicts knew those involved in the kidnapping operation and failed to report them to the authorities.
After considering the arguments, the court sentenced all three defendants to life imprisonment for their roles in the case.
The kidnapping of the pupils and teachers had drawn widespread public concern and renewed calls for stronger measures to tackle insecurity in schools across Nigeria.
