The Borno State Government has confirmed receiving a proof-of-life video showing some of the students abducted from schools in Askira/Uba Local Government Area.
Speaking at the Borno State Education Summit in Maiduguri on Saturday, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abba Wakilbe, played a 15-second video during his presentation, saying it confirmed that the kidnapped students were still alive.
The commissioner said the government is working tirelessly to secure the release of the victims, who were abducted on June 29. According to him, 36 students remain in captivity, including 25 girls and 11 boys.
Wakilbe described attacks on schools as a serious threat to education in Borno State, warning that continued insecurity could reverse the progress made in rebuilding the education sector.
He called on residents, security agencies, and development partners to continue supporting efforts to protect schools and ensure children can learn in a safe environment.
Officials at the summit declined to release the video to the media. However, those who viewed the footage said it showed the abducted students seated on the ground while two armed men stood behind them holding a flag with Arabic inscriptions.
The latest development follows two separate attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Askira/Uba Local Government Area. On May 16, dozens of pupils were abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School, while another attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, on June 29 led to the abduction of 36 students and a teacher.
The Borno State Government says efforts are ongoing to secure the safe return of all those still in captivity.
