Bangladesh's Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina Plans December Return to Face Court Despite Death Sentence.

Bangladesh's former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, says she plans to return from exile in India around December alongside senior members of her Awami League party to voluntarily surrender before a court.

Speaking to Reuters, Hasina said she is aware she could be arrested or even killed upon her return but insists she must go back to her homeland. She said she wants to stand trial and challenge the charges against her through the legal process.

Hasina fled Bangladesh in 2024 after mass protests ended her two-decade rule. She was later sentenced to death in absentia over her alleged role in a deadly crackdown on protesters, accusations she strongly denies.

The former leader also called for the ban on her Awami League party to be lifted, arguing that the Bangladeshi people—not the government—should decide the party's political future through elections.

Neither the Bangladeshi government nor India has officially responded to Hasina's latest remarks regarding her planned return.
