The widow of a police inspector who was allegedly knocked down and killed by a police convoy in Enugu State has shared the heartbreaking final moments she spent with her husband before his tragic death.
Mrs. Ngozi Isiwu-Obodo said her husband, Inspector Obodo, a 45-year-old police officer and PhD holder attached to the Enugu State Police Command, left home after spending the day with their family. Before departing, he bought snacks for their three young children and gave her what would become his final message: "Take very good care of yourself and our children."
According to her, the family had attended church together, and Inspector Obodo had helped prepare the children for school by cutting their hair and ironing their uniforms before leaving for work.
Later that night, she received a phone call from her husband's phone, but it was another person who informed her that he had been involved in a road accident. When she rushed to the scene with relatives, police officers prevented her from seeing him and allegedly refused to disclose his condition. She later discovered that he had died.
Mrs. Obodo described her late husband as a peaceful and hardworking officer who earned a doctorate degree while serving in the Nigeria Police Force despite financial challenges. She said he had hoped his academic achievement would improve his career after the police requested PhD holders to submit their credentials earlier this year.
She appealed to the authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for the fatal incident, alleging that the convoy failed to stop after hitting her husband and dragged his body before fleeing the scene.
The grieving widow said her husband, who lost both parents at a young age and struggled to support his siblings, did not deserve such a tragic end. She expressed concern about raising their three young children alone and called for justice to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
