At least 12 people have died after a fast-moving wildfire tore through Spain's southern Andalusia region, making it the deadliest wildfire in the area's recorded history.
The blaze erupted on Thursday near Los Gallardos in Almeria Province before strong winds rapidly spread the flames into the neighbouring municipality of Bedar. Several victims were found trapped inside their vehicles while trying to escape the fire.
Regional authorities said 19 people remain missing, while search and rescue operations continue. Six others were injured, including a woman with severe burns and another person treated for smoke inhalation. Around 50 residents have been evacuated and are being sheltered in a local community centre.
More than 300 emergency responders, including 150 members of Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME), have been deployed to battle the wildfire. Thick smoke forced the closure of major highways in the affected area.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, though local reports suggest a fallen power line may have sparked the blaze.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the families of the victims and praising emergency crews for their efforts.
The disaster comes as record-breaking heatwaves continue to grip much of Europe, leaving forests and dry vegetation highly vulnerable to devastating wildfires. Scientists warn that rising temperatures linked to climate change are increasing the frequency and intensity of such extreme events across the continent.
