Armed bandits have killed the Chief Imam of Talluje village and two other residents during a fresh attack on communities in Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attack, which started around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, targeted Talluje and Chofi villages in Danchadi District. Several residents were reportedly abducted, livestock stolen, and hundreds of people, mostly women and children, fled to safer communities.
Community sources identified the slain cleric as Malam Bashar, the Chief Imam of Talluje. The identities of the two other victims had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.
A resident, Malam Mainasara Danjuma, said the attackers remained in the village until about midnight, moving from house to house, looting valuables, including mobile phones, while many villagers escaped for safety. He appealed to the government to strengthen security and protect affected communities.
A senior police officer confirmed the attack, saying security personnel had deployed anti-kidnapping operatives to the area over fears that the bandits could strike again.
The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa'i, also confirmed the incident but said authorities were still gathering details on the number of casualties and those abducted.
The latest killing brings to three the number of Chief Imams reportedly killed by bandits in Sokoto State within the past few weeks.
Commenting on the recurring attacks, traditional leader Alhaji Sirajo Isa said many Imams become victims because bandits often attack during prayer times, leaving clerics with little chance to escape while leading worship.
Security analyst Basharu Altine Guyawa said there is no evidence that bandits deliberately target Islamic clerics, noting that the attacks are driven by criminal motives rather than religious ideology.
