At Least 40 Killed, Eight Injured as Passenger Bus Plunges into Ravine in Pakistan

At least 40 people have been killed and eight others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan.

The accident occurred early Friday in the mountainous Dana Sar area near the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. According to local officials, the bus was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway and fall about 70 to 80 feet into a rocky gorge.

Authorities said the bus was overcrowded, as it was carrying passengers from another bus that had broken down during the journey.

Rescue teams from both provinces were deployed to the remote crash site, where difficult terrain slowed emergency operations. Officials used heavy equipment to recover victims and rescue survivors from the wreckage.

Police have launched an investigation, with excessive speed believed to be the likely cause of the crash.

Pakistan's President, Asif Ali Zardari, expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished the injured a swift recovery.

Road accidents remain a major concern in Pakistan due to poor road conditions, weak traffic law enforcement, speeding, and reckless driving.
