The decision by Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to retain President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima as its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election has reignited nationwide debate over the party's Muslim-Muslim pairing.

The announcement, which ended months of speculation that Tinubu might replace Shettima with a Northern Christian running mate, has drawn mixed reactions from political parties, civil society groups, and regional organizations.

Supporters of the decision argue that leadership should be based on competence, performance, and electoral strength rather than religious affiliation. They note that the Tinubu-Shettima ticket won the 2023 presidential election despite widespread criticism over its same-faith composition.
