Woman Dies, Nearly 1,700 Tourists Evacuated After Hotel Fire In Dominican Republic

A woman has died and nearly 1,700 tourists have been evacuated following a major fire at a beach hotel in the Dominican Republic.

Authorities said the fire broke out at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, La Altagracia, on Friday.

The victim was identified as 46-year-old Italian national, Francesca Valentino.

The emergency service reported that three people were taken to medical facilities, while six others received treatment at the scene, including guests, visitors and rescue workers.

Videos shared by local media showed thick smoke rising over the Caribbean coastline as flames spread through parts of the resort, including areas with palm-based roofing materials.

The country’s Emergency Operations Center said the fire spread quickly due to the flammable nature of some roof structures and strong winds.

Firefighters later brought the blaze under control, while investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

Guests were relocated to nearby hotels, and officials said tourism activities in Bayahibe remain normal and safe.

The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean’s top tourist destinations, welcoming millions of visitors every year.
