Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has accused UK authorities of damaging her reputation and integrity after a 13-year investigation that ended with her being cleared of bribery charges.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, the 65-year-old said the investigation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) caused her serious emotional distress and could have been handled differently.
She said the probe affected her freedom, prevented her from travelling and working, and harmed her public image.
A UK court recently found Alison-Madueke not guilty of five counts of accepting bribes and conspiracy to commit bribery after a trial that began in 2023.
Alison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria’s petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015 and became the first female president of OPEC, maintained that she never committed any wrongdoing.
She was arrested in 2015 but was not charged until 2023. Prosecutors had alleged that she received benefits, including luxury goods, vehicles, and properties, from oil contractors.
Her defence team argued that important documents that could support her innocence went missing in Nigeria.
The former minister said she believes responsibility lies in several areas and called for a review of how such cases are handled.
