The US Senate has approved a war powers resolution seeking to prevent President Donald Trump from using military force against Iran without prior approval from Congress.
The resolution passed by a 50–48 vote, with four Republican senators joining Democrats in support. The measure requires the president to seek congressional authorization before taking military action against Iran.
The vote followed a similar move by the House of Representatives earlier this month. Although the resolution does not have the force of law and does not require the president’s signature, it represents a formal challenge from lawmakers over presidential war powers.
Supporters of the resolution argued that decisions involving major military conflicts should be made by Congress as required under the US Constitution.
The development comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, following recent military confrontations and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities.
Both sides have recently held discussions focused on implementing a framework to address disputes, while Iran has called for an end to military actions, sanctions relief, and respect for its sovereignty.
The White House has not indicated whether President Trump will accept or reject the Senate resolution.
