A report claims that Israel secretly deployed a small number of troops to Somaliland earlier this year after recognizing the breakaway region as an independent state.
According to a senior Somali government official cited by Middle East Eye, around 50 Israeli personnel were reportedly sent to Somaliland. The official alleged that some of the soldiers selected were of African heritage to help them blend into the local population.
The reported deployment followed Israel’s decision in December 2025 to recognize Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991.
Israel-Somaliland Security Cooperation
Israeli officials have acknowledged that the two sides have maintained security cooperation for years. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in June that the relationship included plans to expand cooperation and training involving Somaliland’s security forces.
Reports also stated that Somaliland special forces had received military training in Israel and that both sides were discussing deeper security ties, including concerns over maritime security around the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The developments have drawn criticism from several countries, with some regional governments opposing Somaliland’s growing diplomatic and military links with Israel.
Somaliland remains internationally recognized as part of Somalia, despite operating with its own government since 1991.
