The United States government has ordered AI company Anthropic to restrict access to its advanced artificial intelligence models for all foreign nationals, according to the company.
Anthropic said it received an export control directive instructing it to suspend access to its newly released models, including Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for non-US citizens. The order also applies to foreign nationals currently inside the United States, including employees working at the company.
In response, Anthropic said it was forced to cut off access to the affected systems at short notice. The directive was received on Friday evening, and the government did not provide full details of the national security concerns behind the decision.
The company said the most advanced version, Mythos 5, would continue to be available only to US government agencies and selected corporate partners for cybersecurity purposes.
Anthropic explained that its latest AI systems are capable of identifying software vulnerabilities and security flaws, a feature already used by US authorities and some companies to strengthen digital defenses. However, officials are reportedly concerned that the same capability could be misused as a cyberweapon.
The company also said it disagreed with the decision, arguing that similar capabilities exist in other widely used AI systems and that blocking access to such tools could harm global users.
Anthropic added that it had earlier reviewed the government’s assessment, which appeared to focus on limited code-analysis capabilities.
The restriction comes amid growing global debate over AI safety, security, and regulation, as governments move to tighten control over advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
