US Appeals Court Allows Trump Administration to Continue Fast-Track Deportation Policy

A United States appeals court has ruled that the administration of President Donald Trump can continue expanding a fast-track deportation process for immigrants living in the country.

A three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned an earlier decision that had stopped the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from widening the use of expedited removals.

The ruling is considered a major victory for the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and its push for mass deportations.

Previously, expedited removal was mainly used for migrants caught near the US border. The administration had attempted to extend the policy to immigrants detained anywhere inside the US if they could not prove they had lived in the country for more than two years.

Rights groups opposed the move, arguing that it could violate migrants’ constitutional right to due process because it limits their ability to challenge deportation orders.

The lawsuit was filed by the immigrant rights group Make the Road New York. A lower court judge had earlier ruled that the policy could lead to mistakes and the removal of people who should not be deported.

However, the appeals court reversed that decision, with Judge Justin Walker stating that the government could use expedited removal “to the maximum extent allowed by Congress.”
