UK Faces Political Uncertainty as Keir Starmer Resigns, Seventh Prime Minister Expected in 10 Years

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after less than two years in office, following increasing pressure from within his Labour Party.

Starmer said in an emotional statement on Monday that he would remain as prime minister until a new Labour leader is chosen, who will also become the next leader of the United Kingdom.

The leadership contest is expected to begin on July 9 and conclude before Parliament’s summer recess.

The resignation followed weeks of internal disagreements within the Labour Party and disappointing results in local elections. A major by-election victory by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham was reported to have increased pressure on Starmer.

The United Kingdom has now had six prime ministers since 2016, including David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Keir Starmer.

Political analysts say Andy Burnham has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Starmer, although other Labour figures may also enter the race.

The next prime minister will become the seventh person to lead Britain in a decade, highlighting the country’s recent political instability.
