Trump Urges Netanyahu to Be “More Responsible” Over Lebanon Offensive

US President Donald Trump has criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s military operations in Lebanon, saying Israel needs to act “more responsibly” as civilian casualties increase.

Speaking during the G7 summit in France, Trump said Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah had gone on for too long and that too many people were being killed.

“You don’t have to knock down an apartment house every time you’re looking for somebody because there are a lot of people in those apartment houses — and they’re not all Hezbollah,” Trump told reporters.

Trump said he believed Syria could be more effective in dealing with Hezbollah, adding that the group’s activities had become a “minor war” compared with the larger tensions involving Iran.

The US president also criticised an Israeli strike on Beirut, saying he “didn’t like” the attack because it came shortly before a planned US-Iran agreement.

Despite the tensions, Trump said a proposed US-Iran ceasefire arrangement could survive further Israeli operations in Lebanon.

Trump also warned Iran against pursuing nuclear weapons, saying that any attempt to develop them would face severe consequences.

“This deal is a wall to a nuclear weapon,” he said, adding that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon” under the agreement.

Iran has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons and says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

The US-Iran memorandum of understanding is expected to be formally signed in Geneva on Friday, followed by 60 days of negotiations toward a final agreement. Trump said he expects the next stage of talks to be easier.
