Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would be “honored” to meet Iran’s newly appointed Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, if a deal can be reached between the two sides to end ongoing tensions.
Trump made the remarks during a press briefing at the White House, saying such a meeting could happen if negotiations succeed. “If we make a deal, it’s possible that I would meet him,” he said.
The comments come after Iran’s leadership transition, following the election of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei by the Assembly of Experts after the death of his father, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
Iran has maintained that its new leadership will continue the country’s political and strategic direction amid heightened tensions with the United States and its allies.
Trump also referred to past U.S. considerations of military operations targeting Iran’s nuclear materials, saying such actions were ultimately rejected due to the risks of prolonged conflict.
He cited concerns about repeating past U.S. failures in the region, saying he did not want to face a scenario similar to previous unsuccessful American operations in the Middle East.
The remarks come amid continued geopolitical friction between Washington and Tehran, including disputes over nuclear activities and regional influence.
Analysts say Trump’s comments signal a possible shift in tone, though significant political and security obstacles remain before any direct engagement between the two sides could take place.
