US President Donald Trump has announced that a meeting between the United States and Iran will take place in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, despite recent military exchanges between the two countries in the Gulf region.
Trump made the announcement on Monday, saying Iran had requested the meeting. However, Tehran has not officially confirmed that negotiations have been scheduled.
“IRAN HAS REQUESTED A MEETING. IT WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW IN DOHA!” Trump wrote on his social media platform.
The announcement came shortly after Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said technical talks on a proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran were not planned for the week.
Gharibabadi said discussions with Qatar were continuing but denied reports that technical working groups would meet in Doha.
The conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran have created uncertainty over whether the meeting will go ahead, though officials suggested a possible agreement may have been reached later.
The White House said US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, would lead the American delegation in Doha for high-level discussions.
The US and Iran recently reached an agreement aimed at ending their conflict, beginning a 60-day negotiation period focused on major issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme.
The agreement has faced challenges due to continued Israeli attacks in Lebanon and tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.
Iran has opposed arrangements that would limit its control over parts of the waterway, while recent US strikes on Iranian positions were followed by Iranian missile and drone attacks on American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.
Despite the escalation, diplomatic efforts appear to be continuing.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the US would maintain its commitments but warned that any attacks on American interests or commercial shipping would face a response.
Trump also highlighted falling fuel prices following the agreement, saying oil markets had reacted positively after Iran eased restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz and sanctions on Iranian energy exports were reduced.
