Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called for the immediate rescue and release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, expressing deep concern over their welfare in captivity.
Falana made the appeal during a June 12 protest, where he addressed demonstrators on rising insecurity, economic hardship, and the state of democracy in Nigeria.
He said the protest was not only to demand the freedom of abducted victims but also to highlight wider national challenges affecting citizens.
According to him, innocent pupils in Oyo and Borno States have remained in the hands of criminals for several weeks, while many Nigerians continue to suffer injustice and police harassment.
Falana also condemned widespread poverty and hunger, stating that Nigeria has sufficient resources to provide a better life for its citizens if properly managed.
He further described the condition of the abducted children as dire, saying they are without food and medical care.
> “Those kids are suffering. No medical attention, no food for them,” he said, adding that “all of us are in custody in one way or another” due to insecurity.
The senior advocate urged authorities to act quickly, stressing that the abducted pupils and teachers must be released without delay.
He also alleged that one of the teachers had been killed, describing it as a tactic to pressure the government into speeding up rescue efforts.
Falana used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the struggle for full democracy is still ongoing.
He thanked Nigerians who participated in the protest and appreciated the media for their coverage, urging continued civic engagement.
