Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol has died at the age of 47 after spending three years in a coma following a serious illness, the Royal Household Bureau has announced.
The princess, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, passed away on Thursday evening at a hospital in Bangkok where she had been receiving long-term medical care since losing consciousness.
A statement released on Friday confirmed her death and noted her prolonged illness over the past three years.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha was widely respected in Thailand for her public service and legal work, especially her efforts to improve conditions for women in prisons through her “Inspire” campaign, which focused on rehabilitation and reintegration.
She also served in various international and diplomatic roles, including work with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, where she was appointed goodwill ambassador in 2017.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul described her as “a pride of Thailand,” praising her dedication to justice, equality, and social development.
Analysts say the princess was viewed as a modern royal figure who was more engaged with public service compared to others in the royal family.
Following the announcement of her death, mourners gathered at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok to pay their respects.
Her death has also renewed attention on Thailand’s royal succession, as she was once considered a potential heir under constitutional changes, although the current line of succession remains unclear.
