South Korea’s former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to 30 years in prison over allegations that he ordered military drone operations into North Korea, according to a Seoul court.
The court ruled that Yoon authorised the deployment of drones across the border in 2024, an action prosecutors said was aimed at provoking tensions and creating conditions that could justify his later declaration of martial law.
The drone missions reportedly included dropping propaganda leaflets into North Korean territory, an act that significantly escalated military tensions between both countries in October 2024.
A spokesperson for the Seoul Central District Court confirmed the sentencing, stating that Yoon received a 30-year prison term, though full details of the judgment were not immediately disclosed.
Prosecutors argued that the operation was part of an attempt to “fabricate wartime conditions,” which they said undermined national security.
Yoon, who has denied all wrongdoing, is already in custody and is expected to appeal the ruling.
The case adds to a series of legal challenges against the former leader, who was previously impeached and removed from office following a controversial martial law declaration that plunged the country into political crisis.
His lawyers maintain that the drone operations were not connected to any martial law plan and were instead a response to earlier North Korean provocations.
The ruling marks another major development in South Korea’s ongoing political and security controversies involving tensions with North Korea.
