According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at approximately 12:12 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located about 16 kilometers southwest of Saracena. The tremor originated at a depth of roughly 247 kilometers, reducing the potential for severe surface damage despite its strength.
The quake was felt across a wide area, including the city of Cosenza and neighboring towns. Initial assessments indicated light to moderate shaking, with reports of rattling windows, swaying furniture, and residents awakened by the movement.
