The wife of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, has been ordered to stand trial on corruption charges and has been banned from leaving the country.
A Spanish judge ordered Gómez to surrender her passport and report to court twice a month while awaiting trial.
The 55-year-old denies any wrongdoing in the case, which involves allegations including corruption in business dealings, influence peddling, misuse of public funds, and embezzlement.
Prime Minister Sánchez has repeatedly rejected the accusations, describing the case as politically motivated and a campaign against his family.
Spain’s Socialist Party also criticized the ruling, saying Gómez had faced “judicial and political persecution” for two years.
The investigation is part of a wider series of corruption cases involving Sánchez’s family and former political allies, putting pressure on his government.
Gómez will face trial by jury on a date that has not yet been announced.
