At least 17 people, including seven visitors who had travelled for the Eid al-Kabir celebrations, were killed in a deadly bandit attack on Dangulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Residents said heavily armed attackers riding on dozens of motorcycles stormed the village on Sunday morning, opening fire on civilians, looting businesses and forcing residents to flee into surrounding forests.
According to local accounts, the assailants entered the community between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., shooting indiscriminately and causing widespread panic. Several victims were reportedly killed while attempting to escape.
Witnesses alleged that the attackers had travelled through communities in neighbouring Zamfara State before spending the night near the area and launching the assault the following morning.
Among those killed were seven visitors who had come to celebrate the Sallah holiday with relatives. Five were reportedly from Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, while two others had travelled from Shagari Local Government Area in Sokoto State.
Residents claimed the attackers remained in the community for several hours after the killings, preventing villagers from recovering bodies or conducting burial rites until late in the evening.
In addition to the loss of lives, dozens of shops were reportedly looted, while many families abandoned their homes and sought refuge in neighbouring communities.
Some residents also alleged that several people were abducted as the attackers moved through nearby villages. However, those abducted reportedly escaped later during a rainstorm that disrupted the bandits’ movements.
Community members expressed concern over recurring attacks in the area, saying insecurity has continued to worsen in recent months. They called on both federal and state authorities to strengthen security operations and improve road infrastructure to enable faster emergency responses.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed awareness of the incident and said security agencies were taking measures to address the situation.
