Saudi Arabia has executed 100 people so far in 2026, including 65 convicted of drug-related offences, according to an AFP tally based on official announcements.
Seven people were executed on Tuesday, with five of them sentenced for drug trafficking. Among those executed for drug offences, 43 were foreign nationals, according to figures from the Saudi Interior Ministry.
Amnesty International criticised the executions, describing them as a troubling increase in the use of the death penalty and raising concerns about the fairness of trials involving foreign nationals.
The rights group said at least 63 Ethiopian nationals detained in Khamis Mushait, southwestern Saudi Arabia, could face the risk of execution for drug-related offences.
Of the 100 people executed this year, 48 were Saudis, 12 Ethiopians, seven Pakistanis, six Sudanese, four Yemenis, and four Syrians.
In 2025, Saudi Arabia executed 356 people, including 243 for drug-related crimes — the highest figure recorded by Amnesty International since it began monitoring executions in 1990.
Saudi Arabia restored the death penalty for drug offences in late 2022 after suspending it for several years.
The kingdom has faced international criticism over its use of capital punishment, while Saudi authorities maintain that executions are carried out only after legal appeals have been exhausted and are necessary to protect public order.
