The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 24 suspects before a Magistrate Court in Kaduna over the alleged mob killing of a woman accused of stealing a child.
The suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, destruction of property, destruction of police facilities, and culpable homicide.
Police spokesperson Mansir Hassan said the arrests followed investigations into the June 21 incident in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna State, where the woman was reportedly attacked and killed by an angry mob after being removed from police custody.
The court adjourned the case until July 21, 2026, and ordered that the suspects be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
According to the police, more than 100 other suspects are still under investigation for their alleged involvement in the incident, and those found responsible will also face prosecution.
The command condemned mob justice and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
The police said the woman had been taken into protective custody after a crowd gathered around her over allegations of child theft, but the claims had not been confirmed.
Authorities said the mob later stormed the police station, overpowered officers, removed the woman from custody, and attacked her, leading to her death.
The incident also caused damage to police property and other public assets, sparking condemnation from residents and civil society groups.
The Kaduna Police Command assured the public that all those involved would be brought to justice and urged citizens to report criminal allegations through lawful channels.
