A security researcher has revealed that the companion application for Meta's smart glasses contains dormant facial recognition technology, raising fresh concerns about privacy and transparency.
The findings were published on June 4 by a researcher known as Buchodi, who analyzed version 273.0.0.21 of the Android app used with Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. According to the report, the application includes multiple artificial intelligence models capable of detecting faces, generating biometric identifiers, and recognizing individuals.
The app, which has reportedly been downloaded more than 50 million times, contains a facial recognition pipeline consisting of face-detection software, image-alignment tools, and a model that converts facial images into digital biometric signatures.
Researchers also discovered database structures designed to store facial profiles and compare biometric data. Testing of the system showed that recognized individuals could trigger notifications displaying messages such as "Person Recognized," while unknown faces could be stored for future identification.
Despite the discovery, there is currently no evidence that the feature has been activated for ordinary users. The researcher noted that the facial recognition functions remained inactive on standard accounts and that no direct proof was found showing the system collecting facial data from consumers.
Meta responded by stating that the code reflects ongoing development efforts rather than a feature already deployed to the public. Company representatives emphasized that no final decision has been made regarding a facial-recognition product and denied building a secret biometric database of users.
The report has nonetheless renewed debate over privacy protections and the collection of biometric information. Meta has previously faced legal challenges over facial recognition technologies, including major settlements related to the handling of biometric data in the United States.
The discovery follows earlier reports suggesting that Meta had explored introducing facial recognition capabilities to its smart glasses platform. While the technology appears dormant, experts note that much of the underlying infrastructure is already present within the application.
Privacy advocates and lawmakers are expected to closely monitor future developments, particularly as regulations governing biometric data continue to evolve.
For now, the findings highlight the growing tension between emerging wearable technologies and concerns about user privacy, transparency, and informed consent.
