Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has called on Muslim countries and nations across West Asia to strengthen cooperation and develop a regional framework based on their own resources and capabilities.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 20th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Islamic States in Baku on Wednesday, Qalibaf held separate meetings with Numan Kurtulmuş and Sahiba Gafarova.
During his talks with Kurtulmuş, Qalibaf said recent regional conflicts had highlighted the need for greater unity among Islamic nations. He argued that countries in West Asia should rely on their own resources and people to address regional challenges and build long-term stability.
The Iranian parliament speaker described recent military confrontations involving Iran as extensive and said the country had responded firmly. He also praised the resilience of the Iranian people during the conflict period.
Qalibaf thanked Turkey for its support and condemnation of attacks against Iran, stressing that cooperation among Muslim nations remains essential in addressing regional issues.
Kurtulmuş expressed solidarity with Iran and offered condolences for those killed during the conflict. He also emphasized the importance of continuing international attention on the situations in Gaza and Lebanon.
In a separate meeting with Gafarova, Qalibaf said countries in the region should draw lessons from recent conflicts, noting that security challenges affect all neighboring states.
Gafarova reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to maintaining friendly relations with Iran and stated that Azerbaijani territory would not be used against neighboring countries. She also extended condolences over the deaths of Iranian civilians during the conflict.
The meetings took place amid ongoing diplomatic efforts following a memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the United States on June 18 aimed at ending hostilities. While fighting has largely ceased, reports of continued Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon have raised questions about the full implementation of the agreement.
The discussions in Baku focused on regional security, cooperation among Islamic countries, and efforts to promote stability across West Asia.
