Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong warning to human traffickers, saying they will face God's judgment if they continue exploiting desperate migrants attempting to reach Europe through dangerous routes.
Speaking during a visit to Spain's Canary Islands on Friday, the pontiff directly addressed those involved in smuggling migrants across the Atlantic from Africa to Europe.
“Stop. Repent,” Pope Leo said. “For every life lost and every family deceived, you will have to answer before divine justice.”
Migration has been a central focus of the Pope's weeklong tour of Spain. Throughout the visit, he has repeatedly emphasized the dignity and rights of migrants, urging governments and societies to welcome and integrate those fleeing conflict, poverty, and hardship.
The Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa, have become one of the main entry points into Europe for migrants. Thousands attempt the perilous sea journey each year aboard overcrowded and often unsafe boats.
The Pope also warned world leaders that history would judge those who fail to protect vulnerable people escaping war and economic distress.
Official figures show that the Canary Islands received more than 46,000 migrants in 2024, a dramatic increase from fewer than 1,000 arrivals in 2015. Humanitarian organizations estimate that more than 3,000 people died last year while attempting the crossing.
During his visit, Pope Leo toured a migrant reception centre in Tenerife, where he met with migrants and listened to their experiences.
One migrant, Bousso Diouf, told the Pope that migrants are not seeking special treatment but rather “respect, humanity, and the opportunity to live with dignity.”
The visit marks the final stage of Pope Leo's three-stop tour of Spain and highlights the Vatican's continued call for greater compassion and international cooperation on migration issues.
