The Edo State Police Command has arrested four suspects and killed one other in connection with the kidnapping incident that occurred at the Vegetable Market along Airport Road, Benin City, on June 14, 2026.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said three more suspects were arrested on June 20, adding to one suspect earlier arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to four, while one suspect was killed.
The statement said the operation followed directives from the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, after credible intelligence led operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to carry out a coordinated operation.
One suspect identified as Marvelous Isaac, 32, was arrested on June 18 after a gun battle, while another suspect known as Precious was killed during the operation.
Items recovered from the suspects included a Lexus RX 350 SUV with registration number EKP 848 AE, believed to have been used in the kidnapping, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, ₦2.05 million cash, and a motorcycle.
The police later arrested more members of the alleged criminal syndicate, including Gift Raphael, 27, who reportedly helped lead them to the arrest of Wisdom Michael and Rufus Michael during operations in Benin City and parts of Delta State.
Police said all the suspects confessed and linked themselves to the kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.
The Commissioner of Police praised the officers for their courage, professionalism, and dedication, assuring residents that efforts would continue until all criminals are brought to justice.
The incident involved a woman who was reportedly kidnapped while shopping at the popular Vegetable Market with her husband and children on June 14. Witnesses said armed men arrived at the market and took her away.
