A former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Koko/Besse Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Alhaji Muhammadu Mai Barga Besse, has reportedly died while in the custody of bandits.
Besse was abducted alongside a cleric of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah wa Ikamatis-Sunnah (JIBWIS), Alhaji Muhammad Maibarga.
A disturbing video later emerged online showing the two captives being humiliated by their abductors in the Birnin Gwari forest, a known hideout for armed bandits operating in parts of northern Nigeria.
The Kebbi State Police Command had earlier confirmed the death of Alhaji Maibarga in captivity on June 10.
Security analyst and conflict reporter Bakatsine confirmed the latest development in a post on X on Tuesday, June 23.
He wrote: “Devastating update: Alhaji Muhammadu Mai Barga Besse, the immediate former APC Chairman of Koko/Besse LGA in Kebbi State, has also been confirmed dead in captivity.”
He added that both men seen in the videos released from the Birnin Gwari forest died without reuniting with their families after their abduction.
Bakatsine described the incident as another painful indication of the worsening security situation affecting communities across northern Nigeria, saying the tragedy had left two families devastated and raised further concerns over insecurity in the region.
