The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 724 pharmacies and medicine stores in Kwara State over violations of regulatory requirements.
The Registrar of the council, Ibrahim Ahmed, disclosed this in Ilorin after a four-day enforcement operation carried out across 10 local government areas of the state.
The areas inspected included Ilorin South, Ilorin East, Ilorin West, Asa, Offa, Ifelodun, Oyun, Moro, Irepodun and Edu.
According to the PCN, a total of 1,238 premises were inspected, including 167 pharmacies, 957 patent medicine stores and 114 illegal outlets.
Out of the inspected facilities, 724 were sealed. They included 68 pharmacies, 542 patent medicine stores and 114 illegal medicine outlets.
The council said some of the violations included operating without valid licences, poor storage conditions, unauthorised access to controlled medicines, improper training of apprentices and cooking inside medicine shops.
The PCN warned that such practices endanger public health and could contribute to the misuse of controlled drugs.
The council urged Nigerians to buy medicines only from licensed outlets to avoid treatment failures, drug resistance and preventable deaths.
The Registrar added that the council would continue enforcing standards to ensure Nigerians have access to safe and quality medicines.
