Abia Government Bans Okada Operations in Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia Over Security Concerns

The Abia State Government has approved a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada, in the metropolitan areas of Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia.

The government said the decision was taken to improve security, enhance public safety, reduce traffic challenges, and create a more organised transportation system across the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, announced that the ban will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.

The government directed all commercial motorcycle operators to stop operating within the affected areas before the effective date.

Security agencies and relevant authorities have been instructed to enforce the directive. The government warned that anyone who violates the order will be arrested, while motorcycles involved will be seized according to the law.

Residents, transport operators, community leaders, and members of the public were urged to cooperate with authorities to ensure the successful implementation of the policy.
