French police arrested about 20 people in Paris on Saturday after hundreds of demonstrators gathered despite an official ban on a rally against repression and executions in Iran.
The protesters assembled at Place Vauban in central Paris after several buses arrived at the location. Authorities had banned the demonstration, citing concerns over possible clashes with supporters of the Iranian government amid rising international tensions.
The protesters, organised by Iranian diaspora groups and several French and international NGOs, condemned alleged human rights abuses and recent executions in Iran.
Demonstrators chanted slogans against the Iranian government and displayed pictures of people they said had been executed by Iranian authorities.
Police later dispersed the gathering using pepper spray. Organisers claimed around 20 people were arrested and about 12 protesters were injured, while insisting that the demonstration had remained peaceful.
A Paris court upheld the protest ban after organisers filed an emergency appeal.
Rights groups said more than 40 people have been executed in Iran since the start of the ongoing regional conflict, with some reportedly linked to earlier anti-government protests.
