Palestinian Doctor's Detention Draws Fresh Scrutiny After Transfer to Isolation Cell

The legal team of Palestinian physician Hussam Abu Safiya has raised concerns after Israeli prison authorities reportedly transferred him to solitary confinement following a legal challenge to his ongoing detention.

According to his lawyer, Abu Safiya was moved from a detention facility in the Negev region to Nafha Prison, where he is being held in isolation. The transfer allegedly occurred shortly after he appealed the extension of his detention, which has continued without a criminal conviction.

Defense attorneys claim the physician has faced restrictions on legal visits and limited contact with the outside world. They also expressed concern over his health, alleging inadequate medical care during his imprisonment.

Abu Safiya, who previously served as director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was arrested during an Israeli military operation in December 2024. His detention has since been renewed multiple times under Israel's Unlawful Combatant Law, which permits extended detention without traditional criminal proceedings.

His legal team argues that no sufficient evidence has been presented to justify his continued imprisonment and has filed an appeal before Israel's Supreme Court seeking his release.

The case has attracted international attention from human rights organizations and medical groups, particularly after images of Abu Safiya in detention circulated publicly in 2025. Advocates have questioned the treatment of healthcare workers detained during the Gaza conflict and called for greater transparency regarding prison conditions.

Lawyers representing Abu Safiya contend that his detention reflects broader concerns surrounding the arrest of Palestinian medical personnel during the war. Rights groups have also voiced concerns about the physical and psychological effects of prolonged detention, isolation measures, and limited access to legal representation.

As court proceedings continue, international advocacy organizations are urging closer monitoring of the treatment of detained healthcare professionals and renewed efforts to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law.
