Pakistan’s disaster authorities have issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of possible heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, urban flooding, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable regions.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the country has entered a “critical” weather period, with risks expected over the next 12 to 24 hours. Northern areas, including Hunza and Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have been identified as high-risk zones.
Authorities have also warned of possible flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and surrounding urban areas. Provincial and district administrations have been placed on high alert and instructed to keep drainage systems clear.
Residents and travellers have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement during severe weather and to monitor official weather updates, especially in mountainous areas where landslides could block roads.
The warning comes as Pakistan prepares for what could become the fourth consecutive year of severe monsoon conditions.
Last year, monsoon floods killed more than 1,000 people and displaced millions, while the devastating 2022 floods killed nearly 1,700 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
Experts say rising temperatures have accelerated glacier melting in Pakistan’s northern regions, increasing the risk of glacial lake floods. The country is home to thousands of glaciers, many of which are being affected by climate change.
Officials have called for stronger early warning systems, better coordination, and increased international support to help Pakistan manage growing climate-related disasters.
