A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has largely remained in place in Lebanon, marking the longest period of calm in three months of fighting, although concerns remain that the truce could collapse.
A senior Lebanese security official said the ceasefire had been “almost fully respected” since Saturday evening. However, the official reported that an Israeli tank fired shells near a village close to Tyre, while Israeli forces also used sound grenades in two other areas. An Israeli drone was also reported flying over Beirut.
The fragile truce comes as part of wider efforts involving the United States and Iran to reduce regional tensions. Iran had previously announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Washington of failing to stop fighting in Lebanon.
US Vice President JD Vance said progress had been made toward ending the conflict and confirmed that discussions were continuing.
In southern Lebanon, many displaced residents remain reluctant to return home. Hassan Wazni, director of a hospital in Nabatieh, said the situation had remained calm since Saturday but warned that people were still worried because an earlier ceasefire quickly failed.
“People are still uneasy,” Wazni said.
Israeli forces remain stationed in parts of southern Lebanon, where Israel says it is trying to prevent Hezbollah attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military would continue operations as long as necessary.
Residents near the Israeli-Lebanese border also expressed doubts about the durability of the ceasefire, with some saying they remained prepared for possible renewed violence.
A joint statement from US-Iran talks said the sides agreed to create a coordination mechanism to help maintain the ceasefire.
The conflict has caused heavy casualties and displacement. Lebanese authorities say Israeli attacks have killed thousands of people and forced around 1.2 million residents from their homes, while Israel has reported deaths among its soldiers and civilians.
Despite the current calm, both sides remain on alert as efforts continue to prevent the fighting from restarting.
