One Passenger Killed, Several Injured in Sokoto IED Explosion

One passenger has been confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries after a commercial vehicle reportedly hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) suspected to have been planted by bandits along the Kurawa–Sabon Birni road in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The incident happened early Sunday morning when the vehicle was transporting commuters from nearby communities to Sabon Birni town.

Security analyst Bashir Altine Guyawa said the vehicle unknowingly ran over the explosive device during its routine journey.

He stated that the IED was allegedly planted by associates of a notorious bandit leader operating in the area.

The explosion killed one passenger and injured several others, while the vehicle was severely damaged.

Residents who rushed to the scene described the situation as chaotic, saying some victims were trapped inside the wreckage before rescue efforts began.

The injured passengers were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while the body of the deceased was recovered.

The attack has increased concerns among residents of Sabon Birni and neighbouring communities, where repeated bandit activities have continued to threaten lives and disrupt daily activities.

The Sokoto State Police Command had not released an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting.

Authorities are expected to investigate the explosion and work to identify those responsible for planting the suspected explosive device.
