Authorities in China have launched an investigation after a small aircraft crashed into one of Beijing’s tallest skyscrapers, killing the pilot and injuring 13 people on the ground.
The accident happened on Friday evening near the city’s Central Business District when a single-engine, two-seat light sport aircraft struck the CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun.
According to the Chaoyang district government, the aircraft was flying near the East Third Ring Road at about 5:55 p.m. local time when it collided with the high-rise building. The pilot was the only person aboard and died in the crash.
The 13 injured people, who were not inside the aircraft, were taken for medical treatment, officials said.
Photos shared after the incident showed damage to the exterior of the 528-metre building, with two large glass panels broken. The affected area was temporarily covered.
The aircraft involved was identified as a light-sport Aurora SA60L made by Chinese manufacturer Sunward. Flight tracking data showed the plane flew in a wide circle before heading toward central Beijing, where tracking stopped around the time of the crash.
Authorities have not yet revealed the cause of the accident. Investigations are ongoing to determine what led the aircraft to strike the skyscraper.
The crash is considered unusual because Beijing has strict restrictions on airspace around key government and urban areas. The previous reported aircraft crash in the Chinese capital occurred in 2022 when a tourist helicopter accident killed two pilots.
