North Korea has condemned a United States decision to approve the sale of advanced air-to-air missiles and related equipment to South Korea, warning that the move will further heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula, state media KCNA reported.
Pyongyang’s foreign ministry said the strengthening military cooperation between Washington and Seoul is being “systematically reinforced” despite international concerns over rising instability in the region.
The statement cited the US State Department’s approval of a nearly $300 million arms deal for South Korea as a recent example of what it called escalating militarisation.
A North Korean foreign ministry official said US arms sales amount to “war exports” and accused Washington of fueling regional insecurity.
The official added that North Korea would continue to strengthen its own defensive capabilities to maintain a balance of power in the region.
North Korea has repeatedly criticised joint military cooperation between the United States and South Korea, describing it as preparation for war.
In a separate statement, Pyongyang also rejected recent comments by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and European Union leaders, which it said undermined North Korea’s sovereignty.
KCNA reported that North Korea views such statements as hostile and insists there can be no “peaceful coexistence” under current conditions.
Military tensions on the Korean Peninsula have remained high for years, with periodic escalations tied to weapons tests, joint military drills, and diplomatic breakdowns between Pyongyang, Washington, and Seoul.
North Korea has continued to expand its missile and nuclear programmes while rejecting calls to disarm without major security concessions from the United States.
