Nigerian Inmates in Ethiopia Welcome Prisoner Transfer Agreement

Nigerian prisoners held at the AbaSamuel Prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have expressed joy following a new bilateral agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia that will allow eligible inmates to be transferred back to Nigeria to complete their sentences.

The agreement was facilitated by the Nigerian government through the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu. It enables convicted Nigerian citizens serving jail terms in Ethiopia to be repatriated closer to home, where they can serve the remainder of their custodial sentences.

According to reports, the inmates welcomed the development enthusiastically, describing it as a major relief that gives them hope of returning to Nigeria and reuniting with their families.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Ojukwu said the atmosphere among the prisoners was filled with excitement and renewed optimism. She noted that the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to protecting and supporting Nigerians abroad.

She also stated that the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora remains a key priority under the current administration.

The prisoner transfer deal is expected to strengthen cooperation between both countries on criminal justice matters and ensure that sentenced persons can serve their terms in environments closer to their home countries and support systems.
