Nigeria’s Federal Government has announced the arrest of seven suspected commanders of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) at Katsina Airport while they were returning from the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the arrest was made possible through the integration of Nigeria’s identity management system with security databases, including the Nigeria Immigration Service and international security platforms.
According to the minister, the suspects were flagged immediately upon arrival in Nigeria by the integrated identity verification system and were handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.
Tunji-Ojo explained that the country previously operated a fragmented identity system, but reforms under the current administration have connected government databases to improve security operations.
He said the integration of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database with immigration records and Interpol’s security network enabled authorities to identify the wanted individuals.
The minister described the development as a major achievement in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, identity fraud, financial crimes and other cross-border offences.
He added that the new system has strengthened border security and intelligence gathering, while also improving the passport issuance process by ensuring identity verification through the NIMC database.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently signed the NIMC Act, 2026, into law at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in the presence of senior government officials.
