Rev. Chaplain Gbamwuan Samuel Teryima, a teacher at Penworth Secondary School in Gboko, Benue State, has turned the challenges of being born without fingers and toes into a story of determination, education, and service.
Standing before his classroom blackboard every day, Teryima uses his unique method to write and teach students. Despite his physical condition, he has mastered the skills needed to draw maps, write lessons, and guide his students through their studies.
Born in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State as the seventh child in a family of 15, Teryima grew up learning independence and resilience. His mother encouraged him not to see himself as helpless, while his father taught him the importance of persistence and hard work.
As a child, simple activities such as writing and holding objects required extra effort. With patience and determination, he learned to adapt. His teachers and classmates helped him during his early education, and he eventually developed a writing style that allowed him to succeed academically.
Teryima later studied at the College of Education, Katsina-Ala, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Administration, Planning and Supervision and Religion from the University of Calabar. He also earned a Master’s degree in Educational Management from Benue State University.
Teaching became a natural path for him because he enjoyed helping others understand difficult ideas. Today, his students describe him as a dedicated teacher who values understanding, discipline, and hard work.
Outside the classroom, Teryima is also passionate about football. He plays the sport with confidence, relying on timing, skill, and experience rather than physical limitations.
He is the father of three daughters — Patience, Deborah, and Bethany. He also serves as a chaplain, where he shares messages of faith and hope with his community.
Reflecting on his journey, Teryima says he does not want people to define him by what he lacks, but by what he has achieved. His greatest pride, he says, is refusing to allow hardship to turn into bitterness.
His story continues to inspire many, showing that determination and purpose can overcome obstacles.
