A physical confrontation broke out inside Georgia’s Parliament on June 26 during the final plenary session of the spring term, as lawmakers from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the opposition For Georgia party clashed.
The incident occurred during a question-and-answer session after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze presented his annual report. The fight reportedly started after opposition MP Giorgi Sharashidze criticised Kobakhidze over his role during Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent visit to Georgia.
Sharashidze claimed that images from Aliyev’s meeting with Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili showed Kobakhidze had a limited role in the ruling party. His comments triggered angry reactions from ruling party lawmakers.
Videos from the parliament showed MPs exchanging insults before the situation escalated into a fistfight involving several lawmakers. Parliamentary security officers intervened and removed some opposition MPs from the chamber.
Several lawmakers, including Georgian Dream MPs Lasha Talakhadze, a three-time Olympic weightlifting champion, and Archil Gorduladze, were identified among those involved in the confrontation.
Emergency medical teams were later called to the parliament building following the clash.
The parliamentary session was briefly interrupted as officials dealt with the incident.
