The Nigerian Army has announced plans to recruit 28,000 additional soldiers as part of efforts to strengthen its manpower and respond to rising security threats across the country.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed that the expansion follows the establishment of a new training depot in Amasiri-Edda, Afikpo and Edda Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State.
The Army said the move is aimed at increasing recruitment capacity and improving its ability to combat threats such as terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, separatist activities and other security challenges.
Speaking during a briefing ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, the Army leadership said it has also introduced reforms, including the creation of new brigades and units, acquisition of modern military equipment, improved infrastructure and enhanced welfare for troops.
The celebration, themed “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” will focus on national security, civil-military cooperation, technology and defence collaboration.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and stability.
The recruitment plan is expected to further boost the military’s operational strength as Nigeria continues efforts to address insecurity nationwide.
