Burkina Faso has officially ended diplomatic relations with France, the government announced on state television on Friday, marking another major breakdown in ties with its former colonial power.
The decision follows years of growing tensions between the two countries over security issues, national sovereignty, and accusations of foreign interference.
Burkina Faso has been fighting an Islamist insurgency for more than a decade, a conflict that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions across the region after spreading from neighbouring Mali.
Communications Minister Gilbert Ouedraogo said the move took effect on June 26 after a review of relations with Paris. He stated that conditions for cooperation based on mutual respect, trust, non-interference, and respect for national sovereignty were no longer present.
The minister also accused France of supporting “subversive networks” and “terrorists,” allegations France has previously rejected.
The diplomatic split further strengthens Burkina Faso’s move away from France as the country seeks new international partnerships and greater independence in security and foreign policy decisions.
