Bandit leader Bello Turji has reacted to the killing of soldiers in Sokoto State, claiming victory over security forces in a video released after the incident.
Reports said at least two soldiers were killed while several others were injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) hit a military vehicle carrying troops to Bargaja community in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The soldiers were reportedly responding to a distress call after bandits attacked the community on Saturday morning. Residents said the attackers stormed the village between midnight and 3:00am, forcing people to seek military assistance.
A local resident, who spoke anonymously, alleged that the bandits planted the explosive device along the Isa–Bargaja road before the troops arrived.
In the video, Turji said he thanked God for what he described as a victory against those fighting his group. He claimed his fighters had killed some enemies and recovered livestock allegedly taken from them.
The claims made in the video could not be independently confirmed.
Meanwhile, fresh security concerns have emerged after an activist, Basharu Altine Guyawa Isa, alleged that Turji was strengthening his group with new weapons and training along the Sokoto–Zamfara border.
The activist claimed that some of Turji’s fighters were conducting military-style exercises and had received new arms, including advanced equipment. He also alleged that fighters linked to other armed groups had joined the training.
He later shared another video which he claimed showed some of the weapons allegedly acquired by Turji’s group.
Efforts to get a response from the Sokoto State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
Security agencies have not confirmed the allegations.
