Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested two elderly men in Abia State over alleged involvement in selling illegal drugs to secondary school students.
The suspects, identified as 84-year-old Godfrey Orji and 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, were arrested in Umuahia during a nationwide operation against drug trafficking.
According to the NDLEA, Obiora was arrested on June 19, 2026, after receiving intelligence that he was selling illicit substances, including opioids, from a patent medicine shop on Club Road, Umuahia. A search of the shop reportedly led to the recovery of 4.64 kilograms of substances, including tramadol and diazepam.
In another incident, Orji, a retired pensioner, was arrested after security personnel at Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia, allegedly caught him supplying drugs to two teenage students.
One of the students, a 15-year-old SS2 pupil, reportedly admitted that the elderly man supplied him with drugs, which he also shared with other students.
The NDLEA said the suspects would face prosecution, while the students involved have been placed under counselling and rehabilitation.
The agency also reported other drug seizures across the country, including the interception of synthetic cannabis, large quantities of cannabis, and the arrest of several suspected drug dealers in different states.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operations and urged them to continue efforts in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking nationwide.
