Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has reaffirmed his administration’s decision not to negotiate with bandits, saying peace agreements with criminal groups will not be accepted.
The governor stated that his government would continue to rely on military operations, intelligence gathering, and other security measures to tackle insecurity in the state.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Governor Lawal said individuals or groups attempting to negotiate with bandits were acting without the approval of the state government.
He maintained that his administration would not enter into agreements with armed groups accused of killings, kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on communities.
“Seeking a truce with bandits is not my position and never will be,” the governor said, stressing that the government would maintain a firm approach against criminal elements.
Lawal said reports of recent peace arrangements in some parts of Zamfara did not come from his administration, adding that no dialogue with bandit groups had been authorised.
The governor expressed confidence in security agencies, saying sustained operations and cooperation among security forces would weaken criminal networks operating in Zamfara and neighbouring states.
He also argued that previous negotiations with bandits had failed to bring lasting peace and sometimes encouraged further attacks.
Governor Lawal urged residents to support security agencies by providing useful information and assured citizens that his administration would continue working to restore peace and stability across the state.
