The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced the completion of the return airlift of more than 38,000 Nigerian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia after the 2026 Hajj exercise.
In a statement by NAHCON spokesperson Hajia Fatimah Usara, the final flight carrying pilgrims from Zamfara State was expected to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday, marking the end of the 2026 Hajj operations.
Usara said the successful conclusion of the return journey brought to a close a major national exercise involving the transportation of Nigerian pilgrims to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
She added that 12 Nigerian pilgrims remain in hospitals in Saudi Arabia receiving treatment for various health conditions. NAHCON said it is monitoring their conditions and has arranged for their return once they are discharged.
The commission thanked state pilgrims’ welfare boards, licensed tour operators, service providers, aviation companies, medical teams, security personnel, the media, and Nigerian pilgrims for their support during the operation.
NAHCON acknowledged that challenges were experienced during the large-scale exercise but said lessons learned would help improve future Hajj arrangements.
The commission has already begun preparations for the 2027 Hajj, directing relevant agencies and private operators to start early preparations in line with guidelines from the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
NAHCON Chairman, Amb. Ismail Yusuf, expressed gratitude to God and appreciated President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their support towards the success of the 2026 Hajj operation.
